The Digital Collection Builder is a free software tool which heritage organizations can use to host their digital collections online. It makes it simple for libraries, archives, and other heritage organizations to provide access to their digitized collections.
The DCB is a project of Canadiana.org and is available for download from their website. The BC Digitization Coalition plans to offer DCB training and support for BC organizations which wish to use it, in order to meet our objective of seeking to digitize and promote materials and collections that showcase British Columbia’s rich cultural heritage.
At present, organizations must arrange their own servers to host the DCB. This can be done relatively cheaply through a commercial web host. The Coalition is hoping to launch a hosted version of the DCB in 2011.
The DCB has the following features:
• supports multiple collections
• can be themed to reflect a local institution’s branding
• supports leading metadata formats including Dublin Core, MODS, and EAD
• can accommodate common document formats such as still images, video, and basic multipage documents
• supports the OAI metadata harvesting protocol
• features easy exporting of metadata for use in the Canadiana Portal
Please visit the DCB website for more information on technical requirements, documentation, and the support forum.
